Oswego County Lawmakers Discuss Wind Turbines

By Ryan Morden

Oswego, NY – Oswego County lawmakers plan to discuss a resolution today opposing the New York Power Authority's plan to develop wind turbines off the shores of Lake Ontario.

NYPA is taking proposals from developers who want to install wind towers off the shores of lakes Erie and Ontario.

Legislator Morris Sorbello, chairman of Oswego County's Economic Development and Planning Committee, said if this resolution passes, it does not do anything to prevent NYPA from developing wind towers, but it does send a message to lawmakers in Albany.

"We, as a body, can let the state know that we are against this. Can we do more than that? At this point in time I can't say if we could do anything legally down the road [ ] It's basically a resolution saying to our legislatures in Albany that we would like to not have that situation occur," said Sorbello.

Sorbello said the wind turbines would be disruptive and cause property values to go down.

Lawmakers in Jefferson County share the same concern and passed a similar resolution in a committee last week.
